Example of a credit report dispute letter

Explain to the credit reporting agency, in writing, what information you believe is inaccurate. With your letter, make sure to include copies (NOT the originals) of documents that support your claim. In addition to providing your complete contact information that includes your address and name, your letter should identify each item, in a clear manner, what you are disputing on your credit report. Make sure to explain why you dispute the information and state the facts, plus request that it be corrected or removed. You may want to enclose a copy of your credit report with the items in question circled. Your letter may look something like the one below. To document what the credit reporting agency receives, send your letter by return receipt requested, certified mail. Keep copies of your enclosures and dispute letter.
